The Reality of Ordering 300 Baby Chicks

Farming will always be full of surprises. John Connell once said "To be a farmer is to be a student forever, for each day brings something new". At Blue Ranch Farms, we learn something new everyday and are always finding ways to solve issues in the nick of time. Last week, we almost had a fiasco on our hands! Luckily, our amazing Blue Crew figured it out.

We had ordered 300 baby chicks to be delivered from the hatchery last week. We know this may sound odd, but this is how it's done. The hatchery sends the newly hatched chicks quickly and safely to the closest post office of their new destination. This particular group left the hatchery on a Tuesday but got stuck in the bad weather. We were worried about them and worked with our local post office to try and track them down. It wasn't until Friday morning that we received a phone call from the post office! We were so happy to hear our baby birds chirping away in the background. The only problem was, somehow, our chicks had ended up at a post office over 2 hours away. While we didn’t really have the time to drive an extra 4 hours that day, we scrambled to quickly change the roles and duties of everyone so one of us could drive to pick up these babies.

Knowing these precious little ones would need food, water, and space right away, we quickly gathered materials. A few extra boxes, food and water dishes later, we hit the road. Upon our arrival, the chicks were chirping loudly and were the entertainment of the entire post office! Those baby chicks were so happy to get inside the nice warm farm truck, that they chirped and sang all the way home to the farm. As we drove the 2 hours back home to the farm, with 300 baby chicks that were just days old, we were in awe of this wonderful life and the role we get to play in it. We think everyone should have the experience of taking a road trip with 300 baby chicks singing to you! They’re adorable!

Once they were home at the farm, their chicken brooder was all ready for them with heat lamps and plenty of food and water. They are loving their new home where they will live the first 3 weeks of their life until they transition out to the pastures.

We care about the animals here at Blue Ranch Farms and will always do our absolute best to care and provide for them. Even if it means taking a road trip with the birds!
